MY ROLE
Communications Internship
CHALLENGE
In 2016, Squarespace experienced a landmark year of growth, launching major product innovations, high-profile brand campaigns, and achieving significant corporate milestones. As a full-time Communications & PR intern, I faced the challenge of amplifying the company's brand narrative beyond traditional product announcements during this pivotal moment. The opportunity was to position Squarespace not merely as a website-building platform, but as an essential enabler of creative entrepreneurship — particularly for underrepresented communities — while supporting the communications team's efforts across multiple concurrent campaigns, product launches, and media initiatives.
APPROACH & OUTCOME
My approach centered on developing authentic, creator-focused narratives that demonstrated Squarespace's real-world impact on diverse communities. Rather than relying solely on product-driven messaging, I proactively identified and pitched original stories featuring AAPI creatives who were leveraging the platform to build businesses and share their work. I conducted targeted outreach to technology journalists and major publications, highlighting creators like illustrator Jennet Liaw and Passion Planner founder Angelia Trinidad as compelling examples of how Squarespace empowered underrepresented entrepreneurs to reach broader audiences and scale their ventures.
Throughout the year's major initiatives — including the Super Bowl campaign with Key & Peele, the G Suite collaboration, and multiple product launches — I tracked press coverage across all campaigns, providing the communications team with actionable metrics on media placements and reach. I also managed all content updates within the in-house CMS, ensuring consistent brand messaging across the company's newsroom and supporting the content marketing team's broader editorial calendar. This multifaceted approach allowed me to contribute to both immediate campaign needs and longer-term strategic positioning.
